The Company has also played a crucial role in the construction of Toll Plazas in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Toll collection, an activity dating back to ancient times, was one of the chief methods employed by the Roman Empire to generate funds from common people and from businessmen entering Rome, thus ensuring that the users helped to maintain the roads. A logical advancement of this method is the BOT system, whereby the private organization that invests in the construction of roads is conferred with the right to collect Toll for future maintenance of roads. Accordingly, the first such toll project in India on BOT basis was sub contracted to PIL on the Vadodara-Halol stretch, a six lane toll plaza built along the most modern principles.
